This month’s Member Spotlight is on BethAnn Telford:

Name and Nickname: BethAnn Telford – Nickname- BT

Background (Age, Gender, Birthplace, and Running Experience): Background (Age (51), Gender(F), Birthplace (Harrisburg, PA ), and Running Experience ( I ran growing up in competitive sports only (soccer, field hockey, tennis, etc.) then when I moved to Washington, DC in 2011 I started distance running and triathlons. In 2017 I had the honor of representing the United States in the World Marathon Challenge, along with Arlington native Michael Wardian and Olympic runner Ryan Hall.  This consists of running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 consecutive days.)

What is your formula? My “formula” is to train and run/workout by staying safe, healthy and most importantly, injury free.  Having Formula Running Center (FRC) assist me with these goals has been a game changer for me in preparing for my upcoming goals.

Why did you start running? I started to distance run when I moved from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to the Washington, DC area.  I would commute to and from work seeing so many people out on the mall running and truly thought, “what a great way to get to meet people and see the wonderful history of the city.”

Favorite quote? “Never, Never, Never, Give Up Hope!” – Winston Churchill

What are your hobbies? As an adult with brain cancer, my hobby for the last 15 years has been to advocate for pediatric cancer children.  I have personally raised over $1 million dollars in these efforts and will continue to do so till I am no longer able. I also enjoy group workouts, history, art, music (wide variety) and spending quality time with my family and friends.

What is your pre-race ritual (meal, sleep, general preparation, etc.)? Post-race? The night prior to a race I normally eat a good meal of pasta as an early dinner.  I get to sleep at my normal time of “early” evening and then up prior to race in time to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some oatmeal.

Every race I carry the name of a pediatric child with me somewhere on my body, clothes, shoes, etc.  I also ALWAYS carry a handkerchief of my fathers and a pin my mother game me on my first marathon which is a gold angel.

After a race I tend to get a Coke Cola Slurpee to celebrate.  This is a known staple of mine and my family and friends joke with me about this.  Something about them make me very happy!

Why did you join FRC? I joined Formula Running Center as I was told about the studio from Ralph whom I was taking Solid Core classes from.  With the onset of COVID I needed to do more than virtual classes of Solid Core and truly wanted to improve my running without injury and increase my pace.  These workouts with FRC are something I look forward to each week and have enjoyed being part of the FRC family even though I am not on site with everyone else.

What is your PR in your favorite distance?  Marathon distance is my favorite and I PR’d in my home state of Pennsylvania in the Scranton Marathon.  That year I ran for a dear friend who just died from brain cancer and the entire race I thought of him, his wife and two daughters.  He truly gave me the strength to run smart and strong.  And, at the finish line I had my family to enjoy this special moment with.

Do you have a favorite class/service?  My favorite FRC class is the Thursday 6 am Virtual Formula HIIT and Run with Coach Jim.  This is a class that is intense and continually pushing your body to the limit. When I finish this class, I feel exhausted, yet proud of my accomplishments.

Favorite workout tunes/music? I have a variety of workout tunes on my music line-up from AC/DC, Queen, to James Taylor, Andrea Day, Florence and the Machine and Andrea Bocelli

Do you have any races lined up in 2020? Goals for 2020? Yes. I will be running the Harrisburg Marathon (Enders Insurance) on Saturday, November 7th in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  My goal is to finish this marathon strong and healthy.  Next year I hope to once again qualify for the Boston Marathon.

What has been your favorite part of being a member at FRC? My favorite part of FRC is the comradery.  Coaches encourage you and those participating all support each other.  I have been running injury free and stronger since I joined months ago.  I look forward to the day that I get to come into the studio, take a class, and thank everyone in person for making me feel like I am a part of the FRC family!
